Sara Lee

South Korea (NZ)

22 year old Sara Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea and began playing the piano when she was six.

Her family moved to New Zealand a few years ago and she currently studies at Auckland University under Rae de Lisle. In 2007 aged 13, she went to study at the Tchaikovsky Music School in Moscow. Sara has given concerts in Russia, Germany, New Zealand, United States of America and Australia and has been a first prize winner in a number of International piano competitions.

Dong-Wan Ha

South Korea (USA)

Recipient of Artist Diploma in piano performance and collaborative piano uniquely together from Cleveland Institute of Music, Dong-Wan Ha is currently studying in Northwestern University with Alan Chow for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with full scholarship. In 2016, he has won the first prizes in Delia Steinberg International Piano Competition in Spain and Neue Sterne International Piano Competition in Germany.

Dong Yi Lee

Australia (Belgium)

Dong Yi has gathered a reputation as one of Australia’s finest upcoming pianists. He has appeared as soloist with the BBC Philharmonic, Brussels Philharmonic, New Zealand Symphony, Queensland Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony and performed across Europe, United States of America, China, New Zealand and Australia.

Since 2014, Dong Yi has been a soloist in residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Belgium and has also been working with Michael Endres at the Barratt-Due Institute in Norway.

Fanya Lin

Taiwan (USA)

Born in Taipei, Taiwan and starting on the piano at age four, Fanya has been described as a ‘striking interpreter’ giving a ‘committed and heartfelt performance”. She is currently completing her first year as a Doctoral student at the University of Minnesota, having gained her Bachelor’s degree in 2012 at Weber State University in Utah. Fanya’s American orchestral appearances  include the Savannah Philharmonic, Utah Symphony, Coer d’Alene Symphony to name a few. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York and given recitals in Taipei.

Junjie Xi (Withdrawn)

China (USA)

Junjie began piano at the age of four in Zhaoqing, China. He attended the Middle School of the Central Conservatory in China and during this time gave recitals in St Petersburg, Bonn, Minnesota and Beijing. In 2010 he attended the Roosevelt University in Chicago. He has also participated in music festivals in Salzburg and Dublin.

He is currently studying with Vladimir Viardo in USA.

Chung Hok Chun

Hong Kong

22 year old Chung Hok Chun was born in Hong Kong and started piano at age 9. He attended the Junior Music Programme in Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 2012 he began studying for his Bachelor Degree. He has performed in Beijing, Xiamen, Guangzhou and Shenzhen China and at the Wiener Saal in Salzburg Austria.

Ting Chia Hsu

Taiwan (Australia)

Ting is studying a master of music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Dr, Paul Rickard Ford  and with artistic guidance from Prof Natasha Vlassenko. (a Judge at KIPC 2014). He has performed recitals in various parts of the world including Taiwan, China, Singapore, Spain, Germany, Italy and USA. He won first prize at the Taiwan Taichung Jazz Competition and has just won first prize at the Ville de Vallence International Competition in France, April 2016.

Alexander Yau

Australia

Born in Sydney, Alexander is currently in his third year at Sydney Conservatorium.

He has performed in Shanghai, and Hong Kong and recently with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He has made a number of radio broadcasts in Australia and a CD with ABC Classic.

This year he received a Mendelsohn scholarship to study in Leipzig.

Samuel Deason

Canada (USA)

Born in Saskatoon, currently lives in Baltimore where he studies with Boris Slutsky at the Peabody Institute on full scholarship.

Recent orchestral engagements include a performance with the Fort Worth Symphony orchestra, and concerti with orchestras across North America. Recital performance highlights include Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations in Ottawa, a recital including his own composition Rosebud Variations, and Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet with the Amati Quartet. 

He was 2nd prize winner in the 2016 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition (UK) , performing with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.

Arthur Athan

Australia

Arthur is currently studying at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He made his concerto debut in 2014 performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1 with the Old Scotch Symphony Orchestra and reprised the performance with the Monash Academy Orchestra in 2015 to a sell-out concert hall. Arthur is to appear in the 2016-2017 season of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in Perth, Western Australia playing Rachmaninov.

He is also currently studying law and languages.

Jane Ji-hyun Sohn

South Korea (NZ)

South-Korean born Jane Sohn is an accomplished recitalist and soloist, currently based on the North Shore, Auckland. At 7 years old, whilst still in Korea, she started playing the piano and won first prize in various national piano competitions. She came to New Zealand in 2002 to further her musical studies at the Corelli School of Arts and made her concerto debut with the West Auckland Orchestra in 2003. She was a participant in KIPC 2012 and 3rd prize winner in the Wallace National Piano Competition in Auckland. She is currently studying with Stephen de Pledge.

Elina Akselrud

Ukraine / USA (Switzerland)

Born in Ukraine, Elina made her first appearance with an orchestra at the age of eight, studying at the Kiev Special Music School. Elina gained her Bachelor of Music with Honours from Mannes College, USA and Master of Music degree at NEC Boston USA. In addition to regular concert performance and participation in prize winning competitions she recently created a project entitled “Chopin: A letter through the Parisian Years” – a unique combination of piano works, her own photographs and readings of Chopin’s letters. Elina is currently continuing her studies in Italy and Switzerland.

Connie Kim-Sheng

USA

Born in California to musical parents, Connie began piano lessons at the age of three. At eleven she began private lessons with John Perry and continued studying on full scholarship at the Glen Gould School in Toronto, Canada where she gained her Bachelor’s Degree. Connie is currently based in Boston having completed her Master’s Degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. She has performed with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra, the Verde valley Sinfonietta, the Californian State Northridge Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra.

Yi-Yang Chen

Taiwan (USA)

Yi-Yang from Taiwan began studying the piano at the age of eight. He was admitted to the Juilliard School in 2012 and gained his Master of Music Degree in piano performance in 2014. Yi-Yang is currently a doctoral student in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music where he received his Bachelor of Music Degree. He has performed in Seattle, Miami, Canada and Taipei Taiwan and has won a number of competition prizes throughout USA and Taiwan.

Chanyeong Yang

South Korea

Chanyeong began his musical studies at the age of seventeen in South Korea where he was born. He has performed on numerous occasions as soloist, in duos and as accompanist and attended master classes with highly renowned musicians such as Jeremy Menhuin and Carl Cramer. He is currently studying at Kookmin University in Seoul having won an award for distinguished service with a full scholarship. He has performed in USA, France, as well as South Korea.
